Tracie Returns to Bike Challenge to Honour Mum

Tracie Burton 2

Tracie Burton from Burnley took part in Pendleside Hospice's Mountain Bike Challenge last year, raising an impressive £884.48 for the charity.

This year, Tracie is returning to take on the challenge again, in support of those who provided invaluable care to her mother, Val, during her battle with Stage 4 breast cancer.

Tracie’s connection to Pendleside started in 2020 when her father received support there. During that time, she saw firsthand the difference hospice care made for both patients and their families. In January 2024, when her mother Val was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Pendleside Hospice once again became a crucial part of Tracie’s life, offering support to both her and her mother during an incredibly difficult time.

When Tracie first saw the Mountain Bike Challenge advertised in March 2024, she wasn’t sure if she could take part due to her mother's fluctuating health. At the time, Val’s condition was unpredictable, and Tracie was fully focused on providing care and support. However, a heartfelt conversation with her mother the night before the event changed everything. Val encouraged Tracie to go for it, reassuring her that she would be well cared for in her absence.

Despite the challenging wet weather on the day of the event—and not having ridden a bike in two years—Tracie arrived early at Towneley Park the next morning and registered for the 22-mile Chattox route, one of three available challenges. She was delighted to spot a familiar face, Darren Marsden, who was accompanied by his sister-in-law, Pauline, riding in honor of her mother, who had also been supported by the Hospice. Tracie successfully completed the ride, raising an impressive amount for Pendleside Hospice—far exceeding her initial £200 target. Remarkably, she had only set up her JustGiving page the night before and was overwhelmed by the generosity of her family and friends.

“I was thankful that I was raising money while my mum was still here, as difficult as it was to see her struggle. I knew how important Pendleside’s support has been to both of us, and I wanted to give back,” Tracie explained.

The Mountain Bike Challenge in 2024 saw 138 riders take part, collectively raising over £9,000 to support the work of Pendleside Hospice. This year’s event, organised by Pendle Panthers BMX Club and Cycle Sport Pendle, are offering three routes once again, ranging from 9.5 - 32 miles. The routes wind through the scenic Pendle area, giving riders the chance to challenge themselves while supporting a great cause.

With the success of the 2024 event, Pendleside Hospice is excited to announce that the Mountain Bike Challenge will return on Sunday, 8th June 2025. Participants can choose from three different routes—Demdike (9.5 miles), Chattox (22 miles), and Nutter (32 miles)—catering to all skill levels.

For Tracie, returning to the challenge in 2025 is a way to honour her mother, Val, who passed away in August 2024 after receiving continued support from Pendleside Hospice throughout her illness. The Hospice played a crucial role in helping Val manage her condition, offering vital care, advice, and assistance when it was most needed.

“Pendleside was amazing for both me and Mum. They helped stabilise her condition so she could come home after spending time in the Hospice, and they made sure we had everything we needed for her care at home," said Tracie.

“I’ll be taking part again this year, and I hope others will join me in supporting this incredible charity. The work they do is so important, and it’s helped me through one of the most difficult times of my life,” she added.

This year, the event will hold even more significance for Tracie. While last year she had the encouragement of her mother, who was determined for her to take part, this year Tracie will ride in her honour, carrying with her the memories of their time together. “This year will be different. Last year, Mum’s words of encouragement helped me get on the bike, but this time, I’ll be doing it for her. I know she’d be proud to see me taking part again,” Tracie explained.

Pendleside Hospice relies on fundraising events like the Mountain Bike Challenge to continue providing essential services to the local community. All funds raised will go towards supporting the care for both patients and their families, across all departments, including the Inpatient Unit, Hospice at Home, Health, Wellbeing & Rehabilitation as well as Family Support & Bereavement Services.

Registration for the 2025 Mountain Bike Challenge is now open, and riders of all abilities are encouraged to sign up and take part. To register or for more information about the event, please visit our Mountain Bike Challenge event page.
